The Princess Bride
Little Monsters

1980s Tournament: Second Leg

The Princess Bride Little Monsters
A grandfather (Peter Falk), who plays the narrator, decides to read The Princess Bride to his sick grandson (Fred Savage). The plot of the movie is enacted as the grandfather reads from the book. The book is about a beautiful young woman named Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn) who bullies but later falls in love with her farm hand Westley (Cary Elwes). After they acknowledge their love, Westley leaves to seek his fortune so they can be married and live happily ever after. After his departure, Buttercup receives word that his ship was attacked by an infamous pirate and there were no survivors. After mourning for five years, Buttercup reluctantly gets engaged to Prince Humperdink (Chris Sarandon). Before they can get married, a trio of outlaws kidnap her (Wallace Shawn, Mandy Patinkin and Andre the Giant). The kidnappers end up getting pursued by both the Prince's soldiers and a mystery man in black. An epic adventure ensues as true love seems to know no bounds.

Rob Reiner directed this tale full of fantasy, comedy, romance and adventure. This is a classic film from the 80s that everyone, it seems, has seen at least once. God bless Andre the Giant.

Memorable dialogue:

Inigo Montoya: Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Miracle Max: See, there's a big difference between mostly dead, and all dead. Now, mostly dead: he's slightly alive. All dead: well, with all dead, there's usually only one thing that you can do.
Inigo: What's that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change.
After relocating to a new neighborhood, Brian Stevenson (Fred Savage) was looking forward to living a normal suburban life. However that fantasy is short lived after unexplainable things start to happen. Aside from the mystery pranks, Brian's little brother Eric's is convinced a monster lives under his bed. In an effort to prove Eric (Ben Savage) wrong, Brian agrees to trade rooms. Upon his first night in Eric's bed, Brian discovers Eric was telling the truth. He meets Maurice (Howie Mandel), a monster who lives to play pranks and participate in other shenanigans. Despite some awkwardness in the beginning, Brian and Maurice become friends. Maurice introduces Brian to the monster underworld where they do everything a kid wouldn't be allowed to do under adult supervision (eat nothing but junk food, play pranks, stay up all night, etc). Brian loves the monster world but soon learns he is in danger of turning into a little monster himself if he spends too much time there. Brian decides to return to life above his bed until Eric is kidnapped by two monsters. Brian, along with his school/monster friends, travel to the monster underworld to rescue Eric.

I'll say it… this is the one and only time I ever liked Howie Mandel.

Memorable dialogue:

Maurice: A man's best friend. His right hand.
