1980s Movie Tournament: Second Leg

The Karate Kid Caddyshack
Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) moves to California from New Jersey with his mother. Daniel tries his best to assimilate to his new life. He meets a girl he is interested in dating (Elisabeth Shue) but finds himself in the crosshairs of her ex Johnny (William Zabka). Johnny is the star karate student at Cobra Kai dojo and uses his skill to frequently beat up Daniel. When Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), the apartment's handyman, witnesses a beating he decides to intervene and easily defeats Johnny and his friends. Daniel, in awe, asks Mr. Miyagi if he will be his teacher. Mr. Miyagi intentionally declines but changes his mind after a bad confrontation with the sensei at the Cobra Kai dojo (Martin Kove). Mr. Miyagi, aside from being a teacher, becomes like a surrogate father to Daniel. Daniel takes everything he has learned from Mr. Miyagi and using it in a karate tournament where he must fight Johnny.

Pat Morati rocks. Aside from that blanket statement, does anyone know what the hell happened to Ralph Macchio? That guy fell off the face of the Earth. Sadly, Hollywood greenlighted another Karate Kid film. This time it will star Jackie Chan and one of Will Smith's kids... I think I'm going to pass on this remake.

Memorable dialogue:

Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: First, wash all car. Then wax. Wax on...
Daniel LaRusso: Hey, why do I have to...?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Ah ah! Remember deal! No questions!
Daniel LaRusso: Yeah, but...
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Hai! [makes circular gestures with each hand] Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off. Breathe in through nose, out of mouth. Wax on, wax off. Don't forget to breathe, very important. [walks away, still making circular motions with hands] Wax on... wax off. Wax on... wax off.
Daniel LaRusso: Hey where do these old cars come from?
Mr. Kesuke Miyagi: Detroit.
At the exclusive WASPy Bushwood Country Club, a young caddy named Danny (Michael O'Keefe) sets out to win the caddy scholarship. Winning that scholarship would be his ticket out of permanently working in a lumberyard. In order to secure his chances, Danny must get in the good graces of the snobby Judge Smails (Ted Knight) and win the caddy golf tournament which the judge sponsors. Danny also finds himself in a love triangle and faces many foes during his stint at Bushwood. Aside from the stiff WASPs, the club also has a few peculiar regulars. Chief among them is Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield), a nouveau riche land developer who want to turn the club into a condo complex, Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), the Zen quoting playboy son of the co-founder of the club and the gopher-fixated groundskeeper Carl Spackler (Bill Murray). Al goes out of his way to get under the Judge's skin. After a lot of shenanigans, the two decide to take it to the course in a winner-take-all match.

All's well that ends in a Kenny Loggins' song. Harold Ramis really set the bar high with this classic. Simply, this is one of the funniest movies of all time. Who doesn't love Caddyshack?

Memorable dialogue:

Ty: I like you, Betty.
Danny: It's Danny, sir.
Ty: Danny. Danny, I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen; all you have to do is get in touch with it. Stop thinking...let things happen...and be...the ball.

Czervik: Judge, give someone else a chance! You lucky devil! Come here, honey! And loosen up! You're a lot of woman, you know? You wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
Mrs. Smails: You...you...you're no gentleman!
Czervik: I'm no doorknob, either.

Carl Spacler: Cinderella story, out of nowhere, former greenskeeper, now about to become the Masters champion. [swings, pulverizes yet another flower] It looks like a mirac- it's in the hole! It's in the hole!

The successful freshman fairy tale fantasy “Once Upon a Time” will stay put on Sundays and lead into “Revenge,” which moves from its Wednesday slot. “Revenge’s” shift to Sunday is a vote of confidence for the soapy, vengeance-seeking drama, proudly touted by ABC execs as the “No. 1 Most Buzzed About Show,” whatever that means.
