In an ode to the 10th anniversary of Star Wars, Mel Brooks, the king of satire, released Spaceballs. After Princess Vespa, (Daphne Zuniga) runs away, she and her loving robot, Dot (Joan Rivers) find themselves in jeopardy. President Skroob, (Mel Brooks) wants to kidnap the Princess in order to use her as a bargaining chip with her father, King Roland. Planet Spaceballs is running out of air and out of time. President Skroob order Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to seize her. Meanwhile, Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his faithful companion Barf (John Candy) receive a call from King Roland, (Dick Van Patten) offering to pay them $1 million space bucks to save the Princess. Thanks to a gambling debt owed to Pizza the Hutt (Dom DeLuise), they agree to rescue Princess Vespa.
Admit it, you've watched this movie a million times (especially late night on stations like TBS) and still laugh at its absurdity. Nothing beats juvenile puns and the sound effect stylings of the great Michael Winslow. May the Schwartz always be with you. Memorable dialogue: "I'm a Mog. Half-man, half-dog. I'm my own best friend." [After Dark Helmet discovers most of his ship's crew consists of members of the same Asshole family] "I knew it! I'm surrounded by Assholes! Keep firing, Assholes!" |
The Monty Python collective explain it all in this delightfully clever film. According to this troupe life can essentially be broken down to sex, food, politics and religion which demonstrated in episodes throughout the film. I'm a huge fan of the musical number, "Every Sperm is Sacred."
Memorable dialogue: "Maître-D': Uh, today we 'ave for appetizers — excuse me. Uh, moules marinières, pâté de foie gras, Beluga caviar, eggs Benedictine, tart de poireau — that's leek tart — frogs' legs amandine, or oeufs de caille Richard Shepherd — c'est-à-dire, little quails' eggs on a bed of puréed mushroom; it's very delicate, very subtle. Mr Creosote: I'll have the lot. Maître-D': [Pause] A wise choice, monsieur! And now, 'ow would you like it served? All, uh, mixed up togezher in a bucket? Mr Creosote: Yeah... with the eggs on top." |
