Aliens
The Fly

1980s Movie Tournament: Second Leg

Aliens The Fly
Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is the last surviving crew member of a corporate spaceship destroyed after being attacked by a seemingly invincible alien. After the attack, Ripley spends the next 57 years in hyper sleep drifting through space haunted by what happened. Her story is disbelieved by the suits at corporate especially since the planet where they found the alien has since been colonized. When contact is suddenly lost with the colonists, Ripley returns to the planet with a squad of marines, an android (Lance Henriksen), and a Company executive (Paul Reiser). Once on the planet, only one survivor is found… a little girl named Newt. Ripley's motherly instincts kick in and inspire her to protect Newt in the ongoing battle for survival against the aliens.

Thanks to its high-paced and high-intensity action, Aliens has received a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Aside from that honor, it was also nominated for 21 awards (winning 2 Oscars) and cemented James Cameron as one of Hollywood 's foremost directors. This might be one of the best sequels ever created.

Memorable dialogue:

Ripley: Did IQs drop sharply while I was away?
Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a brilliant but eccentric scientist who is bankrolled by Bartok Science Industries. Seth is working on an invention that he feels will change the world. At a press conference, he meets reporter Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis) and reveals to her he invented a set of telepods which allows instantaneous teleportation of inanimate objects from one pod to the other. Amazed Veronica agrees to chronicle his project and soon the two begin a love affair. Seth continues to tinker and figures out how to transport living things in this telepods. Seth, in an impaired state, decides to use himself as the first human subject to be transported through the telepods. Without his knowledge, a common housefly flew into the other telepod just before he teleported. Although everything at first seemed normal, Seth starts to experience some strange occurrences and behaviors. It is only then that he discovers what actually happened when he teleported. He learns his DNA has become enmeshed with the DNA of the fly which is causing him to morph into a human/fly hybrid.

The Fly deals with themes of metamorphosis and the darker aspects of human nature. Jeff Goldblum has never been so creepy (which was mostly thanks to the Academy-Award winning makeup executed by Chris Wales).

Memorable dialogue:

Seth: What am I working on? Uhhh ... I'm working on something that will change the world and human life as we know it.

Seth: Don't be afraid.
Veronica: No. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
